Expression levels of reactive gliosis, pro-inflammatory cytokines, nuclear factor-kappa-B (NF-κB), and the nucleotide-binding domain leucine-rich repeat pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome were analyzed to determine the anti-inflammatory mechanism of action of eugenol. SE-induced apoptotic neuronal cell death, astrocyte and microglia activation, and interleukin-1 and tumor necrosis factor expression were all reduced by eugenol in the hippocampus following SE onset, as our results demonstrated.
